Living Display

When tasked with the desire to create an interactive display for a lifetime of collected objects and art we rose to the occasion. For this creative couple, their space now is a more accurate reflection of their lives, with many collected drawings, paintings, sculpture and photos now showcased. It was our goal to create a display that didn’t feel museum-like, but felt like them, eclectic and intricate. A knee-wall was added to a wide and long corridor space between the foyer and the dining room. A custom live-edge oak shelf rests on top of the wall and provides a cove light to wash the wall below. A series of pins and movable shelves were designed to give the homeowners flexibility to change the display to their liking. A lime-wash coating was added to the back wall, giving more contrast in texture and color and encouraging closer curiosity. The wood also provides durability for art, visual warmth and scale to the space.

Casework was built in the entry foyer for added function and to give a heavier sense at the point of entry. A mantle was added to the existing formal living room fireplace, and the hearth fireplace was clad in hot rolled steel panels to help it better connect with the existing formal living room fireplace.

We also refinished the formal living room furnishings, an antique heirloom chair in the dining room and two new lounge pieces in the hearth room. Each piece works in concert with the overall eclectic feel, but the color palette and materials all form a foundation in texture, color and finish.
